Common Myths About Home Decoration – Part 2

Decorating your home might be a bit complicated and overwhelming sometimes, especially when there are rules that you are supposed to stick to. But here’s the secret: you don’t have to limit yourself to these rules. So, check out the following myths about home decorations!

#1. Do Not Mix Patterns and Prints

300+ Free Cushion & Bed Photos - Pixabay

A well-known myth that needs to go out of the window right away is that patterns and prints should never be mixed. Instead I think there is no better way to add color, interest and to infuse your own personality than by combining all patterns together in a room.

For example, through artful pairing, you can even combine two, three, even five, beautiful patterns. But make sure you are using the right color scheme. Let me use my own house as an example. In my bed room, I used blue, fuchsia and added a dash of soft green for balance while for my dining room, I applied three colors – white, turquoise and red – with a sprinkling of gold.

In addition, in the contemporary house décor, the eclectic décor style, which is characterized by a multitude of fabric and patterns, is gaining a lot of popularity. Besides, do you know that florals and plaids have the potential to coexist?

According to the Toronto-based design expert, Lindsay Agnew, “mixing florals and plaids was done so poorly in the past that people are now scared to mix the two in their home decor.” However, it is noted that if it is done with caution, florals and plaids can live together harmoniously.

#2. Don’t Mix Different Metals

Key-Slot Wall Panels - Moz Designs | Architectural Products + Metals

For those who don’t know, it was nearly considered taboo to mix metals. But I wonder, with so many brilliant golds, brushed nickels and rich coppers, why should we limit ourselves to just one?

For instance, there are some metals that contribute warm tones such as copper and gold while silver and nickel are considered to be cool tones. Hence, imagine the kind of wonderful balance that can be obtained when you mix these different metals. Moreover, the combination can also add texture, glamour and dimension to any space.

#3. Only a Single Focal Point in a Room

Interior, Living Room, Luxury, Home, Home

Indeed, there is nothing in wrong in having a single focal point in a room but there’s also nothing stopping from having multiple ones. For example, if in a room, one wall has a splash of bright color, the other walls can either have a fireplace or a nice window seat. It doesn’t necessarily mean that they are competing with each other, instead they are adding another dimension to a room.

#4. Never Use Outdoor Elements for Indoor Décor

Apartment, Room, House, Residential Interior

Yes, a specific separation between the outdoors and indoors has clearly been made but it doesn’t mean that you have to limit yourself to that separation for your every single décor element. Your goal might be to create a warm, cozy and more nature-like personal environment and one way to accomplish this goal is by using certain outdoor elements.

For example, climbing plants are not reserved only for your yard and instead they might look very charming and whimsical in any interior space. You are also free to add timber cladding or stone structure such as tall statues as a stunning and unique focal point.

#5. if You Have Kids, You Can’t Have Nice Furniture

Apartment Living room, Living room, Furniture, Sofa, Room, Table

Excuse me, but who is the nincompoop who said that? I mean, I have three kids and a nice pricey white leather armchair in my living room.

I don’t know where this myth came from but let me tell you that even though you have kids, two, three, four, five or even six (even though I wonder who might have six kids nowadays), you can still buy expensive and lovely pieces of furniture.

But, if you are still scared of what your naughty rugrats might get up to, then I recommend choosing furniture with indestructible materials and finishes.

Will you now forget these myths and create your own home decorating rules? Please share your comments!

Benefits of Giving Your Room the Natural Light It Deserves

Have you been living in your house for years and every time you pass by a specific room you always ask yourself: why is it so dark? Perhaps it is an attic or a transitional room in which there are no windows and which natural light struggles to reach. Maybe you are even desperate to give to that room a source of natural life. Well, the answer is simple: skylight windows!

Let’s start by saying that to install your roof window or skylight, you obviously need a roof, so that solution won’t work if you live in an apartment in an apartment building (unless it’s on the top floor), but in all other cases, it shouldn’t be a problem. The only thing that could stop you is a possible constraint linked to the historic center, but even here, it is rare that there are problems.

Another small clarification: roof window and skylight have the same function, but differ in positioning. In fact, if the window is suitable for attics and other rooms close to the roof and is perfect for sloping roofs, skylights are more useful in very high rooms or with a flat roof.

Not sure yet that this would be the perfect solution? No worries! In this article, we will see together why and how having a roof window is a good thing!

1 – Natural Light

Let’s start with the main reason. You have a dark room, and you most probably want to light it up, and there is nothing better than natural daylight to do that. In addition to giving new life and making the room brighter, it will give a sense of freshness and freedom that you would not have in a room lit only and exclusively with electric light. Moreover, you will also save on your electricity bill!

2 – Elegance

If there’s one thing that can’t be denied about skylights and roof windows, it’s that they provide an innate elegance to the room they light up. We all grew up with TV, especially in American luxury homes. The skylight is an ever-present element (often also the key to many spectacular entrances). In the collective imagination, it has become a touch of class.

But not only that, installing a skylight or a roof window will also increase the value of your home, so if one day you decide to sell it, you can ask for a higher price than what you bought it for!

3 – Chimney Effect

How Do Whole House Fans Work? A complete guide to Everything you need to know. - Stay Cool Guide

Here we enter basic physics. Hot air is lighter than cool air and therefore tends to go upwards. With a skylight or a window on the roof, you can count on the chimney effect, that is, the exit of hot air from above and the entry of fresh air from any side windows. In this way, the room remains cool even in summer with the beating sun, and you will better fight the humidity, which will not be able to form because there will be no condensation.

4 – Easy to Be Custom Made

It sounds incredible, but making a roof window or skylight isn’t that difficult. Obviously, you will need a specialized company that takes care to cut in the right place and in the right way to not create structural damage. The whole job will then take no more than 3 or 4 days, and generally, you will not even be asked to empty the whole room of the furniture that furnishes it … at most you will move some and cover the others with a cloth to prevent them from getting dirty.

5 – Psychophysical Well-Being

Bring natural light into your home with skylights - HomeCrux

Many underestimate it, but the natural light that comes from above has a beneficial effect on both our psyche and our body. This is because, as mentioned before, it gives the room a sense of freedom and openness that will help you mentally, but this will also be followed by physical well-being because you will immediately have a feeling of relaxation, peace and tranquillity.

Common Myths About Home Decorations

Are you an amateur decorator who is starting from scratch? Do you think that all you need to do is follow the usual rules of the décor world? And what if I tell you that not every décor rule should be considered gospel and instead there are some that are complete myths? If you want to learn more, then read the article below!

#1. The Ceiling Should Always Be White

Interior, Design, Tables, Chairs, White, Wall, Ceiling

I cannot count many times I have heard that regardless of the color of the walls, the ceiling should always be plain white. White ceilings might seem like the norm but there is no decorating rule that says so. Instead white is often chosen as a popular ceiling color as it can reflect light evenly which can help make a room look more spacious.

However, nothing is stopping you from choosing complementary shades that actually match your walls and furniture. For example, stark white ceilings don’t match at all some wall shades such as bold yellow or deep green.

And, as Dee Schlotter, the media color spokesperson of PPG, said, “White ceilings can actually be distracting if there is no other white in the room.”

#2. Home Décor Is Expensive

Staging, Real Estate, Tulips, White, Interior

For one moment please forget the “you get what you pay for” and that decorating and furnishing your home can be a considerable expense. Instead, nowadays you can easily get a range of products for home décor online that can not only give a unique touch to your home but are also very affordable. All you need to do is to find what you want to include in your house, place the order and it will be delivered at your doorstep. Besides, let me tell you that you can also find vintage and exclusive products that are less costly.

#3. Everything Has To Match Perfectly

Dining Room, Table, Chairs, Decor, Furniture

“Matching is so boring,” claimed Lindsay Agnew, a Toronto-based design expert.

The days of matching and monochromatic looks are over. Everything in a room does not have to match. I mean, if you can have furniture of different styles, then why can’t you have different décor pieces as well as artwork of different styles?

In the contemporary household, cohesive coordination reigns supreme and different designs are used to showcase your personal style. For example, you can place a jar candle in the same space where you have placed your favorite Chinese paintings because according to you, it is chicer in this way. Or, if you want, you can pair a big and deep couch with tailored cushions with a chunky coffee table.

Mixing and matching styles not only breaks the monotony but can also give a unique character to space. However, there is one thing that you always need to remember is that when you look at your house décor, it should make you feel happy. In this way, you will also find a method to match your décor pieces in a creative style.

#4. Incorporate Only the Trends

Interior, Furniture, Room, Window, Contemporary

I will be the first to admit that sometimes we let ourselves be influenced by the current home decorating trends. Of course, there is nothing wrong with this, but choosing what’s hot at the moment may not be a good idea as it doesn’t reflect your true style. I would go so far as to say that it might even create a soulless space. Soulless as in dead.

In addition, trends come and go. So, blindly following design trends and decorating your home based on them will not be a good strategy.

What do we recommend? Don’t follow anyone and instead create your own trend! Break the myth of following what one should always include in a drawing room or try something completely new.

For example, what if I tell you that I have once tried bathroom carpeting? You might think that it is weird way of decorating a bathroom but this used to be the look du jour in the 1970s. Moreover, even the actress Jayne Mansfield loved the look so much that she covered her whole bathroom in pink shag covering – from floor to ceiling.

So, why don’t you also have some fun and show off your unique home décor by turning quirky?

So, what do you think of these home décor myths? Please share your comments!

6 Benefits of Installing Cast Floors

Does your current flooring need to be replaced, or are you tired of it and would like something new? There are many different options for beautiful floors. In recent years, cast floors have become increasingly popular. This is because it is available in different colors and designs, and many additional options are possible. Let’s see some of the other benefits this type of floor has to offer!

1) Underfloor Heating

With a cast floor, you will never have cold feet again. A cast floor is itself a warm floor. Would you like more warmth? Then install underfloor heating on the floor. A cast floor is relatively thin, so it absorbs heat quickly. The material is insensitive to temperature fluctuations, and there are even particular cast floors to which stones have been added to retain the heat. Besides, cast floors can be installed seamlessly from room to room, making it easier to include underfloor heating throughout the house.

2) Less Expensive Than You Think

Cast flooring is not a cheap floor, but the prices can be relatively low. Costs for self-leveling floors are calculated per square meter. This price can vary significantly since it depends on several factors—the larger the cast floor, the lower the cost per square meter. The price will also depend on the type of cast floor you want and the floor type on which it is installed. Incorporating additional options such as underfloor heating or patterns will also increase the price.

3) A Cast Floor Is Hygienic and Hypoallergenic

Since cast floors are applied in liquid form until they cover the entire floor, they do not contain any seams. This makes them hygienic. There are no places where dirt or moisture can remain, and, as the material is moisture repellent, nothing can penetrate the floor. For these reasons, cast flooring is often found in hospitals. Cast flooring is also ideal for allergy sufferers. Hair, dust, dust mites, and other particles cannot settle and can be swept up with a broom or vacuum cleaner.

4) Cast Floors Last for a Long Time

If you have a cast floor installed, you will have to deal with the discomfort for a few days. You have to empty the spaces and lay the floor in several layers. Each layer has a purpose and must dry before the next one can be applied. Laying a cast floor usually takes up to a week, but after that, you will have a durable floor that can last up to 50 years. If you take good care of it, it will last for even a more extended period. Bear with the installation, and after that, you may never have to replace your floor again!

5) An Unmatched Look

Cast floors are available in many versions. First of all, you can choose from all colors or a combination of them. You can add motifs, incorporate images into your floor and give it a matte or glossy finish. There are also cast floors with a concrete look or a sand color for a natural, warm look. Overall, the look is elegant, uninterrupted, and smooth.

6) Low Maintenance

For easy maintenance, a cast floor is the best choice. This flooring is effortless to maintain and barely requires anything to hold up well. Vacuuming and mopping alone are sufficient to keep it in top condition. There’s no need to buy unique cleaning products or other expensive products. This makes it an ideal floor for busy families.

Benefits of Using Glass in Your Home Interior

Glass can be basic in style and design, but if used correctly, it can enhance the overall aesthetic of your home. From furniture cabinets to glass doors, there are many ways to use glass wherever you desire. For many years now, people have been using glass as a decorative element.

With various shapes, sizes and colors to choose from, glass items make for wonderful decorative pieces. In addition, glass is also used to brighten your space by letting in natural light. Plus, because it is compatible with other materials like stone, metal, and wood, glass works well with almost any décor.

Why Use Glass Instead of Wood and Steel?

Wood and steel options can be very beautiful when used for decorative features in your home, but they don’t function as well as glass.

Why is that? In this article, let’s look at how using glass can be an advantage.

Transparency

The main advantage of glass is that, as opposed to steel or timber, it is transparent. It is a medium that lets light through, so people can see whatever is behind it. All objects that are located behind the glass are easily identifiable.

Visually, you can feel connected to the exterior world. When you have a room with windows and doors made of glass and you close them, the light will still be able to illuminate the room thanks to the glass.

Having light in your room has two benefits. First, it fills your room with daylight. Second, it saves electricity and thereby reduces your utility bills.

In addition, glass also enables the occupants of your home to stay cool and energized. None of this would be possible without the natural light that enters through the glass.

Waterproof and Dustproof

How to Clean a Glass Table - Without Streaks - Simply Tablecloths UK

With wood and steel models, you have to be mindful of their surroundings. You can’t drop water on wood, because it may crumble. You can’t let water fall on steel either, because it could corrode. This is different with glass. Because its surface is smooth and polished, glass can be cleaned fairly easily.

In addition, glass is also dust-resistant. In contrast to other surfaces, glass does not require much maintenance. This is why it is favored in spaces where there is a lot of dust and dirt in the air.

UV- Stable

Global warming is a reality. And if we do nothing about it, it won’t be long before we start witnessing the impact of our failure to act in time. And with the ozone layer depleted, the sun’s harmful rays are more dangerous than ever. While it might appear that one person can’t make a difference, we can certainly play our part.

That’s why we should use a material in our home that can protect us from these harmful ultraviolet rays. Glass is one of those types of materials because it is UV stable, which means that it is resistant to UV rays. It will not crack, fade or disintegrate if exposed to UV rays. Glass will last longer than other materials like steel and wood and steel that are not UV resistant.

While those were some glass benefits, there are much more to glass than that. You can leave a comment below if you’ve experienced any other advantage of using glass in your house.

If you are located in Australia and are looking for a reputable supplier of different types of glass for your home, check out GlassCo Australia Pty.

How to Disinfect and Clean All the Nasty Stuff in My Carpets?

Carpets accumulate millions of mites that can become sources of infection. Rugs boost up any living room decoration, give life to your home and insulate from the cold. They come from different world countries and come in various styles, colours, decorative motifs, and much more. Some are even real works of art and handicrafts. However, with inadequate cleaning and the test of time, these beautiful pieces of fabric and quickly become a major source of infection. The materials that make up the rugs retain millions of bacteria, dust mites, soot, dead skin remnants and even human and animal hair. Therefore, for optimal maintenance of your carpets, whether wool, silk, cotton, goat hair or synthetic fabrics, it is best to clean them twice a year. To accomplish this task, here are some of the best vacuum cleaners. As such, you will prevent your carpet from becoming a dirt source and the fabrics from deteriorating. Cleaning carpets at home effectively, naturally and economically is possible with a few basic ingredients and some specific tips:

Frequent Cleaning

7 Tips on How to Clean Your Carpets - Houseopedia

For regular and frequent cleaning, we first have to start by turning the carpet over. Then you have to vacuum the back. Dirt, dust and crumbs will be removed. In any case, here’s how to clean your carpets. We turn again and sprinkle a small amount of baking soda. Then we spread it over the entire surface with the help of a soft bristle brush. If we are afraid of the delicate fabric, we can use a completely dry cloth. You have to let the bicarbonate act as long as possible; the ideal would be about 24. Then it is removed with the vacuum cleaner. If this action is done often, the carpets will always be clean and deodorized. This is because bicarbonate naturally eliminates odours without masking them.

Deep Cleaning

For more thorough cleaning, a mixture of two glasses of white vinegar and three tablespoons of sodium bicarbonate is made in a litre of water. The product is distributed with a sprayer. The carpet is brushed gently, and the rug is left to dry well away from sunlight to avoid any colour damage. With equal parts of white vinegar and coarse salt, a paste with a creamy consistency is created, helping us clean the different stains that the carpet may have. This mixture is an excellent stain remover but should be used with care on delicate fabrics. For fresh, damp, or oily stains, apply a mixture of baking soda and cornstarch.

Hand Cleaning

Here's how to keep your carpet clean | AZ Big Media

When dimensions allow, carpets can be cleaned by hand or in the washing machine with a mild and ecological detergent, such as a mixture of Marseille soap in a bottle of water, a cup of baking soda and a few drops of Essential oil of the perfume that is preferred, is optional. All ingredients are mixed well and used as a regular laundry detergent. Cotton or sponge rugs, especially those used in the bathroom, can be treated with Marseille soap. First of all, the soap must be dissolved with water and poured with a spray. It is also recommended that the carpets be allowed to air dry, although away from sunlight that could create stains if, for example, the rug is of a light colour.

Steam Cleaning

How to Clean Carpet: From Vacuuming to Steam Cleaning | realtor.com®

To approach the cleaning of home carpets in a homemade and natural way, we have to mention steam. It is a sanitizing technique that considerably reduces the mites’ population that increase, especially in terms of temperature (approximately 20ºC) and humidity index (60º onwards) accompanying them. These are necessary and optimal conditions for these arachnids. Steam cleaners only use high-temperature water to create a very powerful natural steam with a high disinfection capacity. A study carried out in Glasgow found a decrease of more than 90% in mites’ concentration per gram of dust in the carpets after being cleaned with steam.

Cleaning by Professionals

One of the best solutions is seeking professional help from experts like Jani Queen. Using precise techniques for each type of tissue, they use the injection-extraction system, combining the injection force of specific products to disinfect and clean the tissues and the subsequent extraction of the liquid by sucking up the dirt.

Add Indian Desi Touch to Your Home – Part 3

Since the release of Indian epic period drama movies like Padmaavat, Indian style has been one of the most searched keywords on Google Trends and of course we cannot let you down, so that is why we have put together a list of some easy tips on how to give an Indian touch to your home décor!

Indian Style Wall Décor

Indian culture wall painting | Ancient indian wall painting with animals and people — Stock Photo © ilterzosole #60819671

One way to give an Indian touch to your wall décor is through textile wall art. Traditional textiles from India will remind you of the country’s unique heritage and give a vibrant feel to any room. So, all you need to do is take a pair of scissors, frame some traditional Indian textiles and create a fascinating piece of art.

Moreover, you can make use of Indian folk art as wall décor. It is said that the flavor of food changes every 50 km in India and the same rule applied to art as well. Whether it is the Madhubani art from Bihar or the Warli paintings from the second-most populous state in India, there is absolutely no end to the options you have. So, if you have such vast traditional art forms, why not put them to good use and fill up your wall with these traditional art paintings?

Now, who doesn’t like a nice Hindi movie dialogue? Of course, I am talking for those who understand the language. As a fan of Indian cinema, I know that stars may rise and fade, but Bollywood dialogues remain everlasting.

So, if you are a Bollywood movie lover, download the covers of your favorite movies on the Internet and make a collage of these pictures on a cardboard sheet. Then write some iconic dialogues from each of these films on the covers and put it up on the walls.

Now, below you will find some famous Bollywood movie dialogues that you can use:

  • For a more romantic vibe:

“Hum ek baar jeete hai, ek baar marte hai, shaadi bhi ek baar hoti hai … aur pyar ek baar hi hota hai.”

― Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

“Itni shiddat se maine tumhe paane ki koshish ki hai, ki har zarre ne mujhe tumse milane ki saazish ki hai.”

― Om Shanti Om

  • To add some comedy feel in your home:

“Hum tum mein itne ched karenge … ki confuse ho jaoge ki saans kahan se le … aur paadein kahan se.”

― Dabangg

“Har kutte ka din aata hai … mera bhi aayega.”

― De Dana Dan

Add the Magic of ‘Jaali’

Jaali work | Sarkhej Roza, built in the late 15th century. N… | Flickr

If it’s the first time you hear this word, let me tell you that a jaali refers to a latticed screen that usually includes an ornamental pattern, made through calligraphy and geography. This form of decoration is more commonly used in Islamic architecture but you can also use this quintessential pattern in your home as partitions, doors, wall panels, in pooja rooms, furniture and ceiling designs. This trend will be like a versatile addition to your Indian home décor style.

Chandeliers

Who watched the Indian movie, “Om Shanti Om?” And if you did, do you remember how the villain met his maker? When a magnificent chandelier fell on him. In the movie, the chandelier represents karma’s important role as let’s not forget that it was under that same chandelier where Shanti was buried alive.

Anyway, let me tell you that adding a chandelier in your house will undoubtedly bring that Indian desi touch to your home sweet home. Chandeliers are viewed as symbols of sun capturing the essence of light and most Indian chandeliers are made out of hard stone, such as granite, and are often sandblasted.

Try the Biophilic Design

Biophilia is a term created by a Harvard naturalist, Dr. Edward O. Wilson, and it simply refers to the love for all living things. The biophilic design is a concept that is used to increase our connectivity with the natural environment and this trend is believed to have numerous benefits such as:

  • It reduces stress levels
  • It increases productivity
  • It reduces pollution and cleans the air by reducing noise level
  • It boosts creativity levels

Add Elephant Figurines

Add Indian Desi Touch to Your Home – Part 2

Despite all the Bollywood movie clichés that tend to defy common sense, we are all DDLJ and Indian cinema fans. And if you want to add that Indian desi touch to your home, all you need are some of the best tips for a perfect Indian home interior design.

Old-School Furniture Style

 width=

“The more artisanal you choose, the better.”

When it comes to Indian home décor, furniture plays a vital role in enhancing the visual appearance of a space. So, we recommend you furniture made of rustic and ancient materials such as carved noble wood. For the Indian interior design, solid wood furniture is an essential feature that reflects colonial nostalgia and therefore, traditional pieces like curved armrest chairs, wooden chests and footstools are recommended.

If you really want that authentic Indian style, then you can also use pieces of furniture made of oak or walnut wood or those made from trees native to India like the shisham wood. Yeah, I know that I have to explain what is meant by shisham. So, the shisham wood, is one of the finest veneer timbers that is obtained from the Dalbergia sissoo, also known as the Indian Rosewood.

Another alternative is lacquered furniture. Lacquer is a type of modern wood finish that is used on high-end furniture and it can not only protect your furniture but can also facilitate its cleaning and maintenance.

And if you want to find some inspiration for some exotic and oriental style furniture, then you need to watch the Indian classic “Devdas”, which I suggest you not to watch if you can’t bear to see my darling Shah Rukh Khan die, or “Parineeta.”

Add Some Greenery

 width=
Don’t worry, I am not asking you to create an indoor garden but rather to add a few plants in your house as they can add a natural and decorative touch to any room with zero added effort. We recommend real plants, but you can also opt for faux plants.

However, it does not end only with plants. This feature gives you the unique opportunity to be creative with planters. For instance, you can make one from scratch and paint it yourself. However, nothing is stopping you from buying readymade ones.

The Quintessential Puja Room

 width=

Needless to say, a Puja room is a place where deities, idols and sacred religious texts are kept and used exclusively for prayers and meditation. As you must have observed in most Indian movies and TV soaps, a Puja room is a typical Indian home interior design element. But the most important thing is how it is believed that if there is a prayer room in a house, then the room will automatically start to radiate positive energy throughout your dwelling.

Exotic Additional Objects

 width=

This step involves lot of fun as you try to find some unique objects to build your own little Indian kingdom.

  • Vases, statues and idols are the most common objects as the nature of this embellishment revolve more around mystical culture rather than the western one. Hence, you can add figures that represent Indian divinities.
  • Multicolour fabric cushions are perfect for more intimate spaces such as the bedroom.
  • Stylish rugs can be used liberally as they can bring warmth, freshness and comfort in a house.
  • Framed mirrors are an elegant way to add style and sophistication to any space. They can brighten dark rooms and can visually open up a small space. Moreover, as they are not too expensive, they are one of the best decorative elements for an Indian home décor.
  • Add some pendant lamps as they can be highly decorative and functional.
  • Other choices include masks, clay pottery, diyas, leather puppets, ceramics, decorative boxes in sandalwood, brass lamps and pots.

Use Indian Desi Prints for Soft Furnishings

 width=

Did you know that India is known for its beautifully made fabrics?

That is why it is recommended to use fine fabrics with dabu or ikat prints for your curtain drapes, sheets and cushions.

So, will you incorporate these elements into your home décor? Please share your comments!

Add Indian Desi Touch to Your Home

Have you recently been watching “Yeh Hai Mohabbatein?” Have those Indian telly soaps inspired you to have a typical Indian desi home décor? If yes, then let’s have a look at some essential ideas that might bring an Indian touch to your home!

#1. Always More Lighting

 width=

If you had ever watched “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi”, you would have noticed how much lighting is used in a typical Indian home. But, just a word of advice guys, watch this series only when you have nothing else to do.

Lighting is considered as an essential element of Hindu decoration. Why? As a Hindu, let me tell you that for us, the presence of light represents the non-existence of darkness and evil forces. Light stands for knowledge and wisdom while darkness symbolises all negative forces, such as wickedness, destruction, violence, lust, etc. For example, during Diwali, an Indian festival celebrated during the Hindu lunisolar month Kartika, all Hindus light numerous lamps to get rid of then darkness.

As a result, good lighting is a must for Indian home décor and well, lighting is an element that can accentuate a home’s architectural features and make it look more appealing and alluring. Nowadays, there are numerous lighting options of different colours and sizes available on the market, such as floor lamps, table lamps, hanging lamps, chandeliers, etc. I also recommend using energy-saving bulbs if you want a more efficient and cost-effective lighting system.

However, we also believe in natural sunlight as the sun’s presence in our home depicts Surya, the God of the Sun. For example, early in the morning, I tend to open all windows, doors and curtains and let the beautiful sun rays to enter and illuminate my home.

#2. Add Vibrant Colours

 width=

Colours play a significant role in both Indian culture and religion. For instance, Holi is an Indian festival that symbolises the triumph of good over evil and which is celebrated with colours. If you want to bring that Indian Desi touch to your home, make sure you choose some bright and vivid colours.

For example, some of the colours that are preferred are given below:

  • Red: In the Hindu religion, red has a strong and powerful meaning. For instance, it is the most frequently used colour for auspicious occasions like weddings and is also used, as a sign for married women, in the form of “sindoor”, a traditional red vermilion. Red also represents the colour of the Goddess Shakti.
  • Yellow: For Hindus, yellow is the colour that stands for knowledge, learning, happiness, peace and meditation. For instance, the dresses of both Lord Vishnu and Ganesha are yellow.
  • Saffron: Did you know that saffron is considered as the most sacred colour in Hinduism? This colour represents fire and as impurities can be burnt by fire, it also symbolises purity. However, this colour also holds a sacred meaning as it is associated with holy men and ascetics who have renounced the world.

Indian home décor does not only include aesthetics but also scents. And guys, when I am referring to scents, I am not talking about putting some air freshener in the house after a clogged toilet has infected the whole house. I am speaking about that deep and unique scent present in a home.

The scent of a space can not only prevent your home from smelling like a sewer but can also set the right ambience. Below you will find some ideas to make your home smell great:

  • Sandalwood Incense: It is a fragrant wood that is always associated with the Indian culture and that can be traced back to India and Australia. However, compared to others, it can retain its fragrance for many years. It is even said that if stored correctly, it can last for many decades. Decades? Can you imagine that? So, I recommend the sweet and woody scent of the sandalwood incense for a calm and peaceful atmosphere.
  • Pot-pourri: If like me, it’s the first time you hear this word, then welcome to the club. Pot-pourri actually refers to a mixture of dried and naturally fragrant plant materials that can be used to freshen rooms.
  • Marigold Flowers: Yes, if you want a typical Indian scent in your home, add some Marigold flowers. Their musky and alluring smell is often associated with Indian weddings or pujas.

1) Extra Space

Rooms with high walls will open up new decorating possibilities for you. For example, you can omit an intermediate floor, creating a void. 2) Fun Lighting Plan

Decorating with a high ceiling is a lot of fun. You can take advantage of such ample space by opting for a unique lighting plan. For instance, skylight provide a playful look and can make the room ultra-modern. We also find the brick wall behind the TV to be exceptional. This wall style fits perfectly with the high ceiling concept.

3) Plenty of Room for Art and Culture

Making the most of space with a high ceiling is a piece of cake; an excellent decorating idea is always art. You can buy art in many places: an auction, a brocante or a local artist. A wall full of art is a great way to decorate your home with a high ceiling.

4) More Freedom

With high walls, you can find extraordinary possibilities when it comes to wall design. Stairs, furniture, and possibly statues or plants can be a bit bigger. We once even saw a car as a piece of furniture in a vast room once a factory. The sky is the limit with a high ceiling.

5) Distract

Sometimes the high ceiling is not so desirable; then, it is good to use the space so that the attention is elegantly distracted from the height. This can be done with lighting or furniture.

6) Hidden Ceilings? Show them!

It is common to discover authentic architectural wonders in many renovations. The false ceilings built years ago have gone out of fashion, and now it is more aesthetic and decorative to showcase those treasures. Wooden beams reappearing in all their splendor or Catalan vaults add character and personality. There is always the possibility of painting it, but that will only make it higher. To make it not so high, it is best to leave it in its natural color.

7) Paint the Ceiling in a Nice Color

Nine out of ten ceilings are white. It’s also a safe choice because, to be fair, painting the ceiling a different color seems risky to many. However, other neutral colors can do a lot with the look of a room. Think light gray, off-white, or taupe. If you want to draw attention, you can also try a dark color, such as dark gray or black. Don’t do this if you already have a low ceiling because it will be even lower optically. Another good idea is to paint the walls the same color. Black walls and a black ceiling can look great. Or choose your favorite color. Green, red, orange, purple, blue? Anything is possible!
