When it comes to a good bathroom design, there are more things to consider than just choosing taps, curtains and tiles. If you are designing your bathroom for the first time or renovating it, the following list will help you avoid some common mistakes when designing your bathroom.

#1. Thinking Bigger Is Better

The first tip that I would like to give you is that bigger does not always mean better. Whether you are designing a master bathroom in your dream house or you are trying to add in an extra bathroom for your growing family, you will undoubtedly be tempted to tip the scales a bit. But remember that the most important aspect of your bathroom is that it should have a great design that works efficiently for your lifestyle and household.

#2. Letting the Toilet Be the Star

Now, can we talk about the toilet for a moment?

Honestly, there is nothing stylish or flattering about having a toilet in the front and center of a modern bathroom. For instance, according to Frances Cosway, an interior designer, “Having a bathroom door open to directly face the toilet is not a good idea.”

As the objective of a bathroom’s layout is to have the toilet out of the line of sight, you can tuck it behind the door or put it to the side where it’s not in full view when someone opens the bathroom door.

Personally, I like to put the toilet and shower in their own room while keeping the sink separate. Why? Because this allows someone to take a shower while someone else can get ready at the sink.

#3. Don’t Overlook the Lighting

It is crucial to plan your lighting scheme right at the beginning of your bathroom design project.

For instance, even though it is often said that less is more, this does not apply to bathroom lighting. I believe that many bathrooms would have looked beautiful if only they had more lighting. And, honestly, let’s admit it, dark bathrooms can be a real drag and shady corners are not only charmless but also can connote less cleanliness. Therefore, I recommend you to go for various light sources.

Besides, you can also consider letting in a little natural light. For example, a window can let in fresh air and make the bathroom feel more open and comfortable. However, the trouble when you rely on natural light is that there is never an even light distribution.

#4. Creating a Space That Lacks Personality

Tell me, is there any rule that states that all bathrooms should be plain and white? Of course not!

If you want to inject some personality and creativity into your bathroom space, then don’t be afraid to add some color, texture and pattern. Now, if you are doing a major renovation, you can go for patterned tiles or even create a feature wall with wallpaper in bold print. Not a bad idea, isn’t it?

#5. Don’t Underestimate the Mirror

There are many things that can be said about a bathroom mirror. A mirror is not only a practical bathroom fixture. Instead, it is an asset that can bounce light and can make a bathroom look bigger. In addition, the shape, size and frame of a mirror can really help to make a statement in a bathroom.

However, recently, I have noticed how many people are going for small mirrors or no mirror at all and choosing to hang artwork instead. This really struck me as odd because a good mirror can raise the aesthetic value of any bathroom. A good size mirror is the best element that can be considered for a bathroom makeover as it can create an illusion of no real boundaries.

Compared to large ones, small mirrors can subconsciously evoke a negative image. For example, think of a large window as opposed to a very small one. Which one do you think is better? Chances are you will choose the large one. So, the same goes for your bathroom mirror.
